Today, we think of cities as centers of light./

This, however, is a very modern view of the city./

Until the mid-17th century,/

city streets in Europe were completely dark,/

and people couldn't walk around safely at night./

Louis XIV of France changed it all./

Portable Lantern Service/

At first, Louis XIV had a private company deal with the problem./

In 1662, a businessman opened a company/

that provided a portable lantern service./

Men carrying lanterns were placed at various points in Paris./

When Parisians wanted to go out at night,/

all they had to do was go to one of these places./

Then, a lantern man would take them to any place in Paris./

Parisians loved this new service./

However, the service was not cheap and did not last long./

Paris went back to being a dark city again./

The First Street Lights/

After the lantern service failed,/

the king decided to take matters into his own hands./

So in March, 1667,/

he had a city official deal with the problem./

The official decided that street lighting was the answer./

He had 2,736 glass street lanterns made and placed throughout Paris./

Problems with the First Street Lights/

The street lighting was very expensive./

The candles inside the lanterns were very big/

since they had to burn for eight to ten hours./

The city spent over 10 million dollars on the candles alone,/

so the king created a new tax to cover the cost of street lighting./

Another problem was maintenance./

Every year, homeowners were given responsibility for some streets./

They had to light the lanterns when a bell rang in the evening./

If they failed to do so, they were fined heavily./

Advantages of Street Lights/

Although the early street lighting system had many problems,/

it was a great invention with many advantages./

Robbers could no longer steal at night,/

and people could enjoy going out after dark./

Rulers elsewhere in Europe soon learned/

about the advantages of street lights./

In 1670,/

Amsterdam became the second city to introduce street lights,/

and Berlin and Vienna followed./
